While Apple doesn’t give a great explanation why HomePod might use it, location services on the device is enabled by default. Follow along to learn how to disable location services on HomePod.
HomePod is a great smart speaker for those heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem, including using services such as Apple Music and using smart devices that are compatible with HomeKit. Users will also need an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV in order to play non-Apple Music content through Apple’s proprietary AirPlay 2 wireless protocol.
How to disable location services on HomePod
- On iPhone or iPad, open the Home app.
- Tap and hold or 3D Touch the HomePod icon for the specific HomePod you’re looking to disable location services for.
- Scroll down near the bottom.
- Toggle Location Services to the Off position.
There’s no clear reason as to why HomePod needs location services aside from asking “where am I?” It’s unclear but HomePod may use location services for HomeKit related services such as automation.
Regardless, the toggle is there whether you’d prefer HomePod to not use location services, or are concerned about HomePod tracking your location.
